As part of a very small group of DJs who have managed to break through in recent years without any productions to their name, it should be clear from the outset that Ben UFO doesn’t just turn up and play records.

A voracious music collector, he quickly blossomed from early dubstep and grime sets to incorporate elements of house, garage, and the more soulful end of techno into his musical vision, developing a singular style of DJing that manages to tie together disparate styles while maintaining a strong sense of cohesion. As a co-head of Hessle Audio, he’s followed a similarly visionary path, providing early outlets for scene figureheads including Ramadanman, Blawan and James Blake, blurring the lines between contemporary UK electronic music and classically-informed moods from Chicago, Detroit and New York. His Fabric CD, which took in Shackleton, Mr Fingers, Herbert and Jam City, blasted through 28 tracks in 74 thrilling minutes, and stands as a fine example of a true master of the craft.
